On base

Baseball is back in full swing following the All-Star Break. Do NOT call it the second half, because every team played at least 88 games prior to the All-Star Game. If Major League Baseball truly wants to make the All-Star Game the midway point, it would move it to July 1 or close to it.

The Brewers got off to a good start to the rest of the season with a 4-2 victory in Washington, keeping their one-game lead over the Cardinals in the NL Central, as St. Louis nicked the Dodgers 3-2 at Busch. Pittsburgh won at home over Colorado 3-2, and the Reds lost 4-3 in the Bronx to the Yankees, moving the Buccos into third in the NL Central.

The Royals had a 3-1 lead in the fifth, but the bullpen could not hold it, and the Red Sox came back for a 5-4 victory at Fenway, leaving Kansas City in a dead heat with Cleveland for second place in the AL Central, 6.5 behind Detroit. The Indians won at Comerica over the Tigers 9-3, scoring seven in the seventh.

I spent a (relatively) shorter time at Buffalo Wild Wings today. I hadn’t planned on being in Kansas City today in the first place, but I figured I couldn’t stay away, so I got there at 3:25 and stayed until 8:25. I scored over 12,000 four times on Countdown in six outings. Very good.

I lost a lot of respect for STIFFY. He showed up tonight with his wife and four children. Three of the four children are girls, and none of them looked like they were yet 10. I hope they aren’t old enough to know what stiffy means. I think their father must have watched quite a bit of Beavis and Butt-Head when he was younger. He probably could have, because he doesn’t look like he’s much older than me, if he is older than me in fact.

Topix tonight was on game shows. It must have been the easiest Topix game ever, because I noticed a minimum of 20 perfect scores. I scored 13,677, and it only got me 215th. Wow. I had a lower score on the Topix game about association football July 3, yet I finished second nationally.

Dominated Showdown. Nailed the final question about TV theme songs, knowing the son in question was the theme to the USA Network show Psych. I was so far ahead my final score beat the next two players combined.

I won’t have many more Friday’s like this. High school football will be here sooner than I know it.

I am a sportswriter for a group of weekly newspapers in small towns across northern Kansas. I grew up in New Orleans, went to college at LSU and wandered in the wilderness until Hurricane Katrina finally put me on the path to my current job.
